Gun Dog Retrievers is a full service breeder. Below is some basic information regarding our pups,

our health guarantee, and some general tips when looking for a puppy.

Health Guarantee Information

Gun Dog Retrievers guarantees your puppy to be in good health on the day of delivery and will be free of any illness for 72 hours after purchase. We recommend that you schedule an appointment with your vet during this time to establish your puppy’s vaccination schedule and perform a well puppy exam. This is done to establish the puppy was sold to you in good health. Buyer must make Seller immediately aware of any problems found by their vet during this exam. If the Buyer fails to have the new puppy examined within 72 hours, they agree the dog was healthy at the time of transfer. It is the buyer’s responsibility to protect the puppy from any contact with communicable diseases by not exposing it to public places and keeping up to date on immunizations. Keeping your puppy away from public parks, stores and beaches, etc., until at least the puppy has completed its immunizations, is recommended.

Gun Dog Retrievers provides a 25 month guarantee against life threatening genetic defects, including Genetic Hip Dysplasia, that hinders a normal pet life at a young age. A replacement puppy will be offered from a future litter. Owner must surrender the dog to Gun Dog Retrievers upon replacement. IF the owner decides to sell the dog, the new owner will not be eligible for a replacement puppy. Written diagnosis by your vet with proof of lab testing and x-rays will be required in the event a dog has lost quality of life during the guarantee period. OFA Results proving signs of hip dysplasia must be secured for any hip dysplasia guarantee. Any puppy purchased from Gun Dog Retrievers must be x-rayed between 24-25 months to insure there is no dysplasia. If the puppy is not x-rayed by 24-25 months the guarantee is null and void.

Genetic Testing

Genetic Testing is now affordable and available to the masses. Whether you’re about to purchase your first puppy or your new hunting partner, genetic testing needs to be part of the process. We genetic test all our dogs for the most common diseases known to affect Labrador Retrievers and we choose to only select breeding pairs that are rated clear so that our puppies will be happy and healthy from the moment they arrive.

Genetic DNA Tests

  • EIC – Exercise Induced Collapse

  • CNM – Centronuclear Myopathy

These are two genetic tests that all reputable breeders should be performing prior to breeding. Buyer Beware of any breeder who is reluctant to, or unable to, provide proof of a clear result, as they most likely haven’t performed these genetic tests on either both or one of the parents. Keep in mind, some breeders simply don’t understand the importance of testing. There is a three rating system for the results of these tests:

  • Clear

  • Carrier

  • Affected

clear rating Means that the dog is clear of the carrying the “genome” that causes this a particular disease.

A carrier rating means the dog is a carrier of the “genome” of that disease and may pass it onto its offspring if bred, but is not actually affected by the disease.

An affected rating means the dog actively has the disease and should not be bred.

Our long time standing and belief is to only breed parents that have a Clear rating for either of the above genetic diseases and we will be happy to show proof of the sire and dams tests results upon request.

We not only test for the two above diseases but several other diseases that are in a panel of tests we order from “Paw Print Genetics“. You can even look up the parents on their website.

Dysplasia is a common diseases in Labradors and all breeding pairs should be tested at two years of age, prior to breeding. Minimum OFA for Hips should be “excellent”, or “good”, rated by Orthopedic Foundation for Animals. OFA for Elbows should be a “normal” rating.

PRA – Progressive Retinal Atrophy (which is an eye disease) should have a rating of “normal” (clear).
